German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the scenes of clashes on the sidelines of the founding congress of the AfD youth organization in Giessen were anything but pleasant.
At the CDU party conference in Magdeburg, he said that it was a conflict between the extreme left and the extreme right, reports Bild.
“Just banging your fist on the table – that’s not how democracy works. I want us to be at the political center of our country to show that we can solve problems. Freedom and peace are the most important,” Mertz said.
Protests are taking place in Giessen today due to the establishment of the new AfD youth organization. At one point, there was a clash between the protesters and the police, who used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
